# RiffMates: business model and launch research

Prepared 23 October 2026, Australia/Brisbane. Working brand only: domain, ASIC business-name and IP Australia trade mark availability have not been checked. Alternate names: JamArvo, Riff & Roo, BackVerandah. RiffMates is recommended for clarity, friendliness and national expansion, not as a claim of availability.

## The proposition

A Brisbane-first place to find compatible people to jam with, find or teach adult music lessons, post musical requests, and buy or sell pre-loved instruments and pedals. Launch for adults 18+ in Brisbane and surrounds; design Australian city/state fields for later expansion. Avoid scattering the first users across the whole country.

Social music is the acquisition engine. Paid lessons and sessions create revenue. Gear gives musicians a reason to return. These are hypotheses to validate, not measured demand or guaranteed returns.

## Evidence and what it implies

| Source reviewed | Observed information | Product implication / inference |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Airtasker AU](https://www.airtasker.com/au/earn-money/) | People browse requests, make priced offers, complete tasks and request release of payment. Airtasker deducts a service fee. | Adapt post → offer → agree → complete → review. RiffMates fees below are independent proposals, not Airtasker's published rates. Airtasker insurance does not extend to this app. |
| [Jams Around Brisbane](https://www.meetup.com/jams-around-brisbane/) and [Musicians Wanted Brisbane](https://www.facebook.com/groups/1611157649194025/) | Search results show existing local communities organised around finding other players. These were excerpt-level findings, not interviews or membership audits. | There are already community channels to learn from. Test whether structured matching solves a problem before charging. Do not copy member identities or listings. |
| [Queensland Blue Card Services](https://www.qld.gov.au/jobs/blue-card/required/individuals-businesses/private-teaching-coaching-tutoring) | Private teaching of children, including music lessons, can be regulated; adult-only services are treated differently. [Registered teacher exemptions](https://www.qld.gov.au/jobs/blue-card/required/industries/queensland-registered-teachers) also require context-specific assessment. | Start adults-only. Do not allow child lessons merely because a teacher claims to have a card. Any later guardian flow needs eligibility, linking, currency, exemption and organisational duties assessed. |
| [ACCC buying online](https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/buying-products-and-services/buying-online) | Online marketplaces, business sellers and private sales can have different responsibilities and protections. Total fees and commercial relationships must be clear. | Label business versus private sellers; disclose defects, total prices and complaints routes. Do not make blanket claims that all private sales have no rights or that all purchases have platform buyer protection. |
| [OAIC small business guidance](https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/privacy-guidance-for-organisations-and-government-agencies/organisations/small-business) | Many small businesses are exempt from the Privacy Act, but exceptions apply. OAIC recommends protecting personal information regardless. | Assess actual coverage. Use privacy-by-design and avoid publishing addresses, ID documents or private messages. Revenue size alone is not a complete compliance assessment. |
| [Replicate prediction creation](https://replicate.com/docs/topics/predictions/create-a-prediction) and [retention](https://replicate.com/docs/topics/predictions/data-retention) | Asynchronous jobs return an ID; poll for terminal status. API input/output data and files are normally removed after one hour. | Run through a protected server, save job IDs and immediately copy successful files into durable app storage. |
| [FLUX Schnell schema](https://replicate.com/black-forest-labs/flux-schnell/api/schema) and [Seedance 1 Lite schema](https://replicate.com/bytedance/seedance-1-lite/api/schema) | Image prompt/aspect/output fields and video duration/resolution inputs are documented. Prices and capabilities may change. | Use the included manifest and bounded batch script. Recheck availability, licence, input schema and current prices before spending. |

Evidence supports product patterns and risk controls. It does not establish Brisbane market size, willingness to pay, competitor satisfaction or launch economics. Those require interviews and actual funnel data.

## Proposed revenue model

All amounts are AUD; these are test prices. Confirm GST treatment and whether quoted fees include GST before launch. Do not add undisclosed fees at checkout.

| Product | Launch proposal | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Social jam profiles, matching, messaging | Free | Build local density without making friendship a paid service. |
| Paid lessons and session requests | Free to post; 10% provider commission on completed bookings; no poster fee | Simple service marketplace economics. The total offer is what the poster sees. |
| Free jam cost sharing | No platform commission initially | Distinguish shared studio costs from paid professional work. Document agreed costs. |
| Gear classifieds | Free local listings and messaging; no integrated checkout initially | Validate interest before building payment, fraud and delivery operations. |
| Teacher Pro, later | A$12/month proposed, optional | Scheduling, recurring lesson tools and a richer profile. Never sell a verification badge. |
| Featured listing, later | A$5 for 7 days proposed, labelled Sponsored | Optional placement after enough organic demand exists. No hidden ranking payments. |

An A$80 completed lesson at 10% creates A$8 platform gross fee revenue, with A$72 due to the provider before any separately agreed costs. This is not net profit. Processing, refunds, tax, support and moderation reduce margin. Payment collection, release and payouts must use a marketplace-capable provider; do not describe an unimplemented balance as escrow or insurance.

### Illustrative monthly scenario, not a forecast

- 200 completed A$80 lessons × 10% = A$1,600 gross commission.
- 40 optional teacher subscriptions × A$12 = A$480 gross subscription revenue.
- Total A$2,080 before tax, provider costs, acquisition, software, hosting, payment fees, refunds, disputes, screening and moderation.
- If operating cost is assumed at A$2,000/month and contribution per lesson after variable costs is assumed at A$5, about 400 lessons/month would cover that cost with no subscription contribution. Neither assumption has been validated.

## Launch and validation

1. Interview 10 adult players, five adult teachers and five adult learners. Ask about their last attempt to find someone, failed connections, acceptable travel and preferred first venue. Do not lead with pricing.
2. Pilot West End/South Brisbane, New Farm/Fortitude Valley and Chermside/Nundah. Invite consented founding members and manually help match instruments, schedules and genres.
3. Seek permission from rehearsal spaces and community venues to promote a weekly beginner-friendly public jam. Verify opening hours, fees, accessibility and booking rules before listing any real venue.
4. Test North Brisbane, Redcliffe and Moreton Bay demand before wider Queensland expansion. Keep travel filters honest; do not invent distances.
5. Measure weekly active players, profiles receiving a relevant reply within 48 hours, message-to-session conversion, first successful jams, repeat bookings, cancellations, report rate and moderation response times. Set targets only after the first baseline.
6. Turn paid bookings on after payment onboarding, cancellation/refund rules, dispute ownership, provider tax responsibilities and support coverage are operational.

Acquisition experiments: consented music-community partnerships, teacher referrals, rehearsal studio QR codes, instrument-store flyers, local open-mic partnerships and suburb landing pages. No scraped mailing lists or fake members. Budget and ROI need testing.

## Layout reference

Use Airbnb's broad discovery pattern: large editorial hero, rounded search, calm cards, favourites, useful filters and detailed listings. Use Airtasker's request/offer pattern. The included design, copy, green/cream palette, illustrations and shader are original. No Airbnb/Airtasker logos, page source or proprietary components are bundled.

## Live-launch decisions still required

Operator business details; domain and trade mark clearance; provider suitability and insurance advice; current privacy and consumer-law assessment; child-safe scope; moderation staff and escalation policy; payment provider and fees; cancellation, refunds and disputes; consent for profile photography and recordings; hosting region and international data flows; tax and record-keeping; music performance/recording rights for events. The ZIP is a demo and implementation brief, not a legally reviewed operating service.
